What is Presidio, TX famous for? ›

Presidio is the western gateway to Big Bend Ranch State Park, Fort Leaton and Big Bend National Park. The famed “River Road”, Highway 170 between Presidio and Lajitas, was designated by National Geographic as one of the most scenic drives in North America.

The surrounding area is the oldest continuously cultivated area in the United States. Farmers have lived at Presidio since 1500 B.C. By 1400 A.D. the area Indians lived in small, close-together settlements, which the Spaniards later called pueblos.

The presidios in Texas were Nuestra Señora de los Dolores de los Tejas (1716), San Antonio de Béxar (1718), Nuestra Señora de Loreto and Nuestra Señora del Pilar de los Adaes (both 1721), San Francisco Xavier de Gigedo (1751), San Agustín de Ahumada (1756), San Luis de las Amarillas (1757), and (1789).

The first Europeans came to what is now Presidio in 1535 with Spanish explorer Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca and established one of the first European settlements in the area. This makes Presidio the oldest town in Texas — the town says that it was officially established in 1683.

Located in the heart of the Bay Area, the Presidio is a National Historic Landmark and one of America's most visited national park sites. Long home to native people and later a military post under three flags, it's now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

A presidio (jail, fortification) was a fortified base established by the Spanish Empire between the 16th and 18th centuries in areas under their control or influence. The term is derived from the Latin word praesidium meaning protection or defense.

Presidio is a very small town of about 1,000 people. Although it is small, there are positives, such as no traffic or crimes. People know each other out here, which keeps us close. We seem as if we are family with each other, every single person here is nice and welcoming.

DeWitt-stationed at the Presidio-conducted the internment of thousands of Japanese-Americans while, simultaneously, U.S. soldiers of Japanese descent were trained to translate, interrogate and decode in Japanese at the first Military Intelligence Service language school at Crissy Field.
