What is a Hot Toddy?

The hot toddy has been around since the early 16th century. The first toddy’s were actually called “taddy” which is a Hindi word meaning “fermented tree sap”. Tree sap was given to anyone who had a cold or illness as a medicine to cure their ailments.

The hot toddy’s that we know and love today are much different than those first tree sap concoctions. By the mid 18th century, an Irish doctor named Robert Bently Todd had taken the idea of taddy’s and adapted it to the modern world. He would prescribe his patients a mix of hot brandy, cinnamon and sugar water. This mix quickly became the go-to cure for a common cold. It was even given to children!

Today, any hot drink made with sprites, spices and sugar can pass for a hot toddy. Of course, we wanted to create a non alcoholic hot toddy. One that would taste even better than the original and still cure your cold without needing even one drop of liquor.

Typically, hot toddy’s are made with whiskey, adding even more power to the drink. However, you don’t needalcoholto make a delicious (and effective) hot toddy! Our non-alcoholic version is fantastic and effective.

How to Make a Non Alcoholic Hot Toddy?

Making a non alcoholic hot toddy is incredibly simple. It is as easy as making a cup of hot tea! In fact, the whole recipe begins with hot brewed tea.

You can make this delicioushot drinkwith any kind of tea that you would like. It’s really up to you! Keep the flavors of the spices in mind when you choose your tea. Black tea works well as it has a neutral flavor while an herbal tea may conflict with the spice blend in our recipe.

Green tea is another great option and is known for it’s health benefits, too. The healthier the hot toddy, the better! Give a few different kinds of tea a try to see what you like best.

The brewed tea is mixed with honey, fresh lemon juice and spices. Be sure to mix everything together while the tea is still hot to help the honey dissolve. The spices will also mix in better when warm.

Fresh lemon juice is always the best option. It has the most flavor and also the most health benefits. Our recipe uses honey as a sweetener since it is known for it’s natural, nutritious properties.

If you do not have honey on hand, substitute it for brown sugar, simple syrup, or even agave nectar. You can skip the honey for a less sweet drink, but it really does help with the cold-curing properties of our hot toddy!

Once the ingredients are blended together, the non alcoholic hot toddy is ready to drink! Add a lemon wedge or a cinnamon stick as a garnish and for some extra flavor. Then sit back and enjoy every warm sip!
