SCC Z-Chain Chain Clearance Specifications and Details

The SCC Z-Chain tire chain requires a minimum of 15 mm of clearance on the inside sidewall of the tire. While other obstructions may be present, the critical clearance area on most vehicles is the inside sidewall of the tire. This is where the tire comes closest to suspension components like springs, shocks, and struts, as well as brake lines. If you are unsure if your vehicle has the 15 mm of clearance to accommodate this chain, be sure to check your vehicle's owner's manual for more information. If you are still unsure, chat or email with one of our winter traction experts today for help.

Bought these for my Armada, the owners manual said no chains for 20' tires. Well these fit tight with plenty of clearance, no slapping even in turns. We don't get a lot of ice and snow here but when we do I'm prepared. Last year we had more than usual, I had no problem getting out and getting around. I highly recommend these!!

Cables rusted well into several layers of strands after one use off road. No salt to warrant such severe degradation of the product. They were cleaned and heavily oiled immediately after use. I do not recommend this product for longevity.

I live in SoCal near the beach but bought these for a trip to Yosemite in winter. Chain control put in place the last 2 days so needed to have them to be able to leave. Myself and my brother had very little experience putting on chains but were able to figure this out after a short period of study. Hardest part was having to kind of get under the truck to clip the link on the back of the tire, but after doing that tightening was easy. Drove 2... read more...

Can't beat the traction you get with these chains!! I drove a nurse to her patients around 200 miles over a weekend during a a freeing rain turned ice storm. The first day just used the chains on my rear tires. (rear wheel drive Colorado) no problems. The second day I had the chains on the rear tires and one chain on right front tire. Roads were solid ice. the Right front tire aloud me to steer going down hills in in curves. Kept me from going... read more...

Bought these for my daughter's new new Mitsubishi Outlander Sport so she could visit us in the mountains of Big Bear Lake. I use the same chains on our Subaru Crosstrek XV so I was pleased to find these at a price from your company substantially lower than what I paid locally. Easy on, easy off, thank God though we are not required to use them unless it is really snowing hard, in which case, stay home!

I live on top of a mountain and these are a life-saver for my RWD Charger. The steep 14_ grade 2 mile long paved road and 1.5 mile long gravel side road have not given me any trouble. Overall the Z-Chain grips great but can be a little 'greasy' on the looser gravel road.

Based on our previous use of Vulcan Tire Chains and have moved a bit further south, now for emergency use only. So far no emergencies of such_ but. Based on history, the easiness of installation, agility to move along faster on ice, dependability, compretively longer life we feel secure while having these in the back of the pickup. Security, having them and ready probably means we will never need them. Insurance.

These were very hard to get on our tires which are grappler off road tires. We called Vulcan and the chains are the correct size but we had to roll the truck back and forth to get them to attach. Too much work to get them on!

Easy to put on with good instructions. Gloves provided a nice addition. We had a tough winter and I kept chains on for 2 weeks at a time. They got me around town safely. With conditions as we had this year, chains made more sense than buying snow tires. We cross mountains at times but never had to put them on.

FAQs

How fast can you drive with Z chains? ›

Tire chains are only intended to withstand a certain amount of punishment. Drivers should never exceed speeds of 30 mph when chained.

Do tire chain sizes have to be exact? ›

We find that, despite labeled tire sizes, there is quite a bit of variability from tire to tire caused by such things as wear, pressure, manufacturer, and tire type (ie mud tires). In our experience a recommended chain size will only fit 80% of the tires it should.

Can you use wrong size tire chains? ›

Snow chains come in various sizes and are designed to fit specific tire sizes, so it's crucial to select the correct size that matches your vehicle's tires. Using the wrong size of chains can be ineffective and potentially damaging to both the chains and your tires.

Are tire chains worth it? ›

Both items can help you winterize your car. Tire chains may be the best option if you want to save money and don't often drive in winter weather. However, if driving in snow and ice will be a regular activity for you, and you don't mind switching tires throughout the year, then snow tires are a viable option.

Can you leave chains on your tires overnight? ›

Tire chains are going to offer more traction in drastic snow conditions, but socks might be the correct choice for milder winter weather. Although tire chains can be left on overnight, especially in ongoing winter conditions, it is not recommended to do so with some styles of snow socks.

How long do chain driven engines last? ›

In modern internal combustion engines, the chain drive is designed to last the lifetime of a vehicle. In practice, it's a different story. This is because of age-related and use-dependent wear. Often, the cause is poor-quality oil or a failure to observe oil change intervals.

Should tire chains be tight or loose? ›

To ensure optimal performance and safety, it is crucial to install and adjust tire chains according to the manufacturer's instructions. Make sure the chains fit snugly around the tires, with even tension and proper engagement with the tire surface.

Can snow chains damage brakes? ›

Sometimes the chain might fall inside the wheel, and wind around and damage the brake hose.

Do snow chains damage tires? ›

Snow chains can damage your tires if they're not installed improperly. They can also cause some damage if they contact the road. Make sure that your snow chains are installed correctly. Only use them on roads that have a layer of ice or snow.

What are the disadvantages of tire chains? ›

Disadvantages of Snow Chains
  • You can't drive faster than 30 mph.
  • They are a temporary measure.
  • They can damage the car if they break.
  • They can damage the road.

Do chains work on black ice? ›

The short answer is no. Snow chains work best in deep snow conditions and do not really help with traction on icy surfaces.

Should I use 2 or 4 tire chains? ›

Four-wheel drive vehicles should use tire chains on all four tires. You must use tire chains for those wheels on the drive axle for two-wheel drive vehicles, but it's much safer and easier to control if you have chains on all four tires.

What's the fastest you can drive with snow chains? ›

Most manufacturers recommend a maximum speed of 30 mph with chains on. (After all, if road conditions warrant chains, you'll be driving slower anyway.) If you drive too fast, the chains may break, which can scratch up your car's exterior paint or result in tire damage.

What is the maximum speed of chain drive? ›

They are generally suitable for speeds up to 1350 metres per minute ( 4500 feet per minute ). The speed of the driven sprocket in relation to the speed of the driver can be determined by using a simple formula based on the number of teeth on the driver and driven sprockets as shown below.

What is the max speed for on spot chains? ›

— chains MUST BE engaged when traveling between 2 mph and 25 mph. — chains MUST BE disengaged when traveling between 2 mph and 35 mph. Vehicle MUST NOT exceed 35 mph with the chains engaged. Vehicle can stop on the chains, and then start moving again, as long as the switch is still in the engaged position.

How fast can a truck drive with chains on? ›

Driving Speed: When driving with chains, most truckers don't get past 30 mph.
